The Ngorongoro Crater is a literal “Garden of Eden” and one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five—Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Rhino—in a single day. However, finding them requires strategy.
Expert Spotting Tips:
- The Black Rhino: These are the rarest. Head to the lake floor at dawn; they are most active before the heat of the midday sun.
- The Leopard: Look up! They prefer the fever trees in the Lerai Forest.
- Lions: They often use the shade of parked safari vehicles to hide from the sun—you might find them closer than you think.
- Early Starts: We enter the crater as soon as the gates open. Not only is the light better for photos, but the animals are far more active.
